Online Dating
In the US, many have heard the saying, "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" or the term "Battle of the Sexes". These kinds of ideals stem from the notion that there are innate differences between the men and women. These differences are most evident in relationships that involve love and sex; we value different things and we communicate differently. We are able to identify these discrepancies, during the beginning stages, before the relationship evolves (i.e. before the two have sex, or fall in love).
I have heard before that, from an evolutionary standpoint, women tend to be indecisive when selecting a mate, because they are thinking about what it'd be like if they reproduced with the guy. Therefore, the woman evaluates his personality (interpersonal skills, behavior, etc.) and then his appearance. On the other hand, men seem to be simpler creatures, as their objective is to "spread their seed", so their more so concerned with appearance and then personality. In other words, women and men both care about looks and personality but, depending on which gender you are, you prioritize one over the other.
According to the documentary that we watched in class, women's biggest fear about online dating is that they'll meet a serial killer, while men's biggest fear is that they'll meet a fat woman. I guess that this makes perfect sense, from an evolutionary standpoint. This certainly rings true to me. I have visited Craigslist and Ok Cupid, and my approach versus the guys' approach show that I prioritize personality, while they prioritize looks. For example, they tend to start with, "Hey gorgeous," or they'll tell me that my photos caught their eye. Some will even ask for me to send them a current photo of myself, before we meet. On the other hand, I am more concerned with the language (looking for red flags) their using, and I emphasize the fact that I want our first outing to be in a public space.
There was recently a social experiment conducted, to test this "theory". A lady named Sarah created a profile on the dating app "Tinder", and she set up dates. When they men that she set these dates up with showed up, they found that Sarah was much heavier than the photos on her profile. The men were obviously reluctant to interact with her; they all commented on her weight, and all but one of them left the date. One of the guys even told her that didn't being lied to, before he left the date. Another, before leaving, complained that he 'wasted gas for this'. The theory was tested on women as well, through the same kind of social experiment and, despite the fact that they seemed reluctant, none of the women left the date. In fact, one of the women agreed to go on a second date with the fat guy!
